My Tingle
or "The Sound of Silence" I hope you'll pardon me for taking a spot on the front page, but I've never heard anything as thrilling as this from the choir before. It was a whole bar - four steady beats - of complete silence in the Finale of Aida. We all knew we could make a lot of noise, and we were doing just that "we come in triumph!!" when Tim cut us off, and everybody stopped - dead! No strangled hoots or whoops, no overlaps from people who weren't watching, just a total silence as though the sound had been cut off with a razor. And in the silence, I could hear the sounds of the hall, and it's fittings, the sharp resonances and vibrations from the light shades, the slap echo as the sound raced to the back of the hall, and bounced back to us, the diminishing sound reverberating around the hall, dying away to total quietness. And then, after four majestic beats of silence, we all started in again, all together, loud as we could. It was the most impressive thing I've heard the choir do, and a tribute to Tim and all the members' teamwork and discipline. It was also one of the most difficult things for a large amateur choir to do, but now we've done it once, I look forward to more tingles like that. Well done , everybody Mike |
